Established and later abandoned by the Umayyads during the 8th Century, Anjar accredits her now rich landscape to the Armenian refugees she welcomed back in 1939. Today, endowed with two water sources and wetlands, Anjar is a bird sanctuary for endangered species, in stark contrast to the slender columns and fragile arches of her 8th Century fortified city ruins.
